Star Ledger College Summer League–July 2, 2008–Results

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On Wednesday night, the second full week of hoops concluded at the 2008 Star-Ledger Summer League at the old College Avenue Barn on the main campus of Rutgers University. Once again as always, there are two games with the opener starting at about 6:30 PM followed by the second, which commenced at about 8:15 PM. GMC Hoops did not attend the festivities on this night, but Jay Gomes of NJ Hoops managed to put together the results and the latest standings.

In the opener, Bignell Planning (3-1) rebounded from its first loss of the summer on Sunday night with a 75-69 victory over VP Builders, which is still winless on the season. Newark native and current player at Paris Junior College in Texas, Charles Funchess equaled West Georgia’s, John Pringle (8 rebounds) with a game high of 21 points. In the rebounding department, former St. Benedict’s star, Jheryl Wilson of NJIT grabbed a game high 13 boards for Bignell while Mark Tracy, an alum of Franklin Township, and currently of Middlesex County College attacked the glass for a team high 11 rebounds for VP Builders. Wilson, who also added 9 points on the night, handed out a game high 7 assists as well while Rashod Calloway of Tampa dished out a team high 4 assists for VP. Abdul Ouedrago, who helped lead Newark Science to a Group I State Championship over Paul Gause and Schalick back in 2005, and now plays at William Patterson, collected 12 points and 8 rebounds for the winners while David Cherry, formerly of Roselle Catholic, and currently from Rutgers-Newark chipped in for the losers with 14 points and 5 rebounds.

In the nightcap of this rare Wednesday night doubleheader, AXA Advisors moved into a first place tie at 3-1 by defeating the Scarlet Fever, 112-101. Although Sean Baptiste, a former standout at St. Joseph’s, and current star at FDU had a game high 31 points for the Scarlet Fever, Jonathan Mitchell of Rutgers paced the winners with a team high 24 points. Both Mitchell and Baptiste battled for rebounding honors with a tie for game high at 13 that gave them each a double-double. Former Mount Vernon star, Mike Coburn, who now plays at Rutgers, dished out 8 assists for AXA while Matt Hall (19 points and 5 rebounds) of Stonehill handed out 4. Christian Morris of Rutgers had 16 points and 8 rebounds to chip in for AXA while former Colonia all time leading scorer, and current Stonehill star, Nick Smith had a monster game with 28 points including 7 threes to go along with 8 rebounds for the Scarlet Fever.
