Star-Ledger College Summer League–July 8, 2008–Results

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On Tuesday night, the third week of action at the 2008 Star-Ledger College Summer League continued with another doubleheader at the College Avenue Barn on the main campus of Rutgers University. GMC Hoops did not attend any of the action on this night due to taking a trip to Middlesex County College to take in the summer league action there. However, Jay Gomes of NJ Hoops was kind enough to provide the results from the games played. The first game pitted Bignell Planning versus Nelligan Sports Marketing at 6:45 PM followed by the nightcap between VP Builders and AXA Advisors.

In the opener, Bignell Planning got back on the winning track, and moved into a first place tie with D’Annunzio & Sons at 4-1 thanks to a slim, 69-66 victory over Nelligan. Former St. Benedict’s grad and current NJIT standout, Jheryl Wilson led the charge for the winners with 16 points while Chris Gaston of Fordham led all scorers with a game high 20 points along with 12 rebounds to get a double-double for Nelligan. In the rebounding department, former Newark Science standout, Abdul Ouedrago, who now plays at William Paterson pulled down 12 boards to go along with 12 points to record a double-double for Bignell while Paul Nelson (10 points) of Yale grabbed a whopping 19 rebounds for Nelligan in a losing cause. Eric Wilkins of Miami dished out four assists for Bignell while former Bloomfield Tech star, R.J. Hall (Marist), and Linden standout, Daryl Lampley (St. Peter’s) handed out three assists for Nelligan. Mike Venezia, who played at Westfield High School, and is now on the roster at Colgate, helped out for the winners with 15 points.

Moving on to the finale, VP Builders now has a two game winning streak thanks to a one point, 92-91 victory over AXA Advisors to improve its record to 2-4 on the summer. Terrence Grier (26 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists), who was a standout high school player at Cranford several years ago, and previously played at Rhode Island with South Plainfield’s Marquis Jones, tied Jonathan Mitchell of Rutgers with a game high 26 points. Former Paterson Catholic big man, Ian Chiles collected 13 rebounds for VP Builders while Jonathan Mitchell equaled the game high with 13 boards of his own. Grier also added 11 assists for game high while former Mount Vernon standout, and current Rutgers player, Mike Coburn dished out six. Former St. Augustine’s Prep star, Anthony Farmer, who now plays for Rutgers had a stat filled performance with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists for VP Builders while recent St. Anthony’s graduate, Mike Rosario, who will be playing for Rutgers in 2008-09, collected 23 points and 8 rebounds for AXA. Christian Morris added 14 points and 10 rebounds in the losing cause for AXA.
