Star-Ledger College Summer League–July 15, 2008

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On Tuesday night, July 15th, the fourth week of action continued over at the 2008 Star-Ledger College Summer League over on the main campus of Rutgers University. Once again there was a doubleheader with the opener starting at 6:30 PM followed by the nightcap at 8:15 PM. GMC Hoops was not in attendance on this night since the site was out at both the Middlesex County College Summer League, and the TBSA Summer League. However, thanks to the efforts of Jay Gomes of NJ Hoops, the web site still managed to obtain the results as well as the latest standings.

In the first game, AXA Advisors got back on the winning track, and at the same time moved into a second place tie with Bignell Planning with a 100-78 victory over Bignell. Former St. Anthony’s star, and recent graduate, Mike Rosario, registered a game high 30 points for the winners while NJIT’s Jheryl Wilson from St. Benedict’s collected a team high 18 in a losing cause for Bignell. Jonathan Mitchell was again able to attain a double-double with 23 points and a game high 12 boards while Newark standout, Charles Funchess, who now plays at Paris Junior College in Texas pulled down a team high 9 rebounds for Bignell.

Former Mount Vernon star, Mike Coburn, who now plays at Rutgers, handed out a game high 6 assists for AXA while Funchess, who tallied 15 points along with his 9 boards, completed a stat stuffers delight of a night with 5 assists. Other notable efforts included the play of Christian Morris of Rutgers, who had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Colin Aldridge of Brown, who collected 12 points and 7 boards.

In the finale, D’Annunzio & Sons continued to roll to its seventh straight victory after losing on opening night to Bignell Planning thanks to a 94-76 decision over VP Builders. Pat Jackson of Rutgers led the charge for D & S with a game high 23 points while former Cranford standout, Terrence Grier, who now attends FDU after a brief stay at Rhode Island, tallied a team high 18 points for the losers. Hamady N’Diaye, the 6’11” center for Rutgers collected a triple-double of 10 points, a game high 12 rebounds, and 10 blocks. NJIT’s Justin Garris equaled his teammate with 12 boards while Mike Luzzi of Caldwell College pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with his 13 points on the night to get a double-double for VP. Grier, who ended up collecting 18 points and 7 rebounds, also handed out a game high 6 assists while Corey Chandler had another stat stuffing feast with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and a team high 5 assists..
