BOUND BROOK, NJ–On Thursday night, July 31st, Piscataway defeated the host school, Bound Brook for the Championship of the 2008 Bound Brook Summer League. The Crusaders had entered the contest with an unblemished 10-0 record, but the Chiefs won easily by a 55-34 score. P-Way, which entered post-season play as the third seed with a 6-2 overall record, avenged its only two losses of the regular season by defeating both second seeded Somerville in the semifinals, and top seeded Bound Brook in the Championship.
GMC Hoops was only able to capture the final 6:00 of the game due to the fact that it was over at the TBSA Summer League Championship between J.P. Stevens and Bishop Ahr. Arriving in the gym, the web site sat down with Piscataway already well in control of things with a 50-28 lead. A minute later, P-Way added a one of two showing from the foul line for a 51-28 advantage. The Crusaders then scored on their next possession as Jordan Hawkins dished left to Michael Schieferstein for a layup that closed the gap to a mere, 51-30 at the 4:23 mark. The Chiefs would get those points back though on an offensive rebound and putback of a Antoine Beverly miss for a 53-30 edge with 3:32 to go. Bound Brook answered with a layup on its very next series to pull within 21 at 53-32 with 3:15 to play.
P-Way had a chance to go up by more, but couldn’t cash in on the offensive rebounds it got on a possession. With 2:18 to play, Beverly grabbed an offensive board, but couldn’t put it back in, and then Scott Kinney picked up two more offensive rebounds, but each time he failed to capitalize. A little less than 30 seconds later, Bound Brook got on the board again when a Crusader player drove into the key for a foul that resulted in two free throws, and a 53-34 Chief lead at the 1:50 mark. Piscataway then closed out the scoring with another patented nifty drive through the middle by Jeff Adkins for the layin, and the final 55-34 score.
