Raritan Bay Summer League–August 4, 2008

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–On Monday night, GMC Hoops began the next to final week of 2008 Summer League action by traveling over to South Amboy Middle/High School after work to take in the nightcap game of the Raritan Bay Summer League, which was entering its final two days of play this year. Once more there was a full slate of games although one would wind up being a forfeit. Below are the results of the first three games:

  • East Brunswick 2–Union Catholic 0 (forfeit)–High School Division
  • Metuchen over St. Stan’s by 6–7th and 8th Grade Division
  • Milltown 29–Scarlet Nets–5th and 6th Grade Division

The finale was a contest from the High School Division between the G-Force Stallions and Corpus Christi. When GMC Hoops arrived to see the game, it entered the gym with G-Force already well out in front by a score of 30-9. The Stallions then added another basket for a 32-9 lead before Corpus Christi, which is located in East Brunswick, scored the next five points to close to within 32-14 at the 6:06 mark. Rob Gomulka, a member of the St. Joseph’s roster, then netted a three pointer from the right wing for G-Force to make the score, 35-14 with 5:38 to go in the first half. Woodbridge’s own, Pablo Ozuna then added a pair of free throws for a 37-14 advantage at the 4:28 mark of the first half.

Corpus Christi then scored three straight points including an offensive rebound and follow at the 3:39 mark, and then netted one of two at the line following a rebound a drive upcourt that resulted in a foul on a layup attempt with 3:12 to go to pull within 20 again at 37-17. However, just seconds later, G-Force pushed the margin back up to 23 with a three pointer at the 3:04 mark. After getting a field goal, Corpus Christi then was assessed a technical foul that resulted in one of two free throws by Bethea for G-Force that made it a 41-19 game with 1:49 left before the brief intermission.

The Stallions then scored the final four points of the half as Kevin Seabrook faked a three pointer, and then proceeded to drive in from the right wing for a layin, and a 43-19 lead with 37.1 seconds left. Then, before the half, G-Force got another field goal for a 45-19 advantage at the break. In the first period of action, Corpus Christi, managed to only connect on 5 field goals, two three pointers, and 4 of 8 free throws for 19 points while G-Force clicked on 13 field goals, 5 three pointers, and 4 of 8 foul shots for its 45 points. Despite the rough start, and the difficult odds, the East Brunswick based Catholic School fought back with a 31-18 showing in the second half to make things more competitive at the end. To the team’s credit, Corpus Christi refused to give up, and played until the end.

In the second half, Corpus Christi started things off with four of the first six points over the opening 3:27 for a 47-23 G-Force lead at the 16:33 mark. The East Brunswick school opened up with a pair of foul shots at the 19:12 mark for a 45-21 score. Both teams would then exchanged scores before Corpus Christi drew a charge at the 16:33 mark. After drawing a foul on a nice move for a layup attempt that drew a foul, Corpus Christi drew within 23 with a one of two showing at the foul line for a 47-24 G-Force lead at the 15:32 mark. Over the next two plus minutes, the Stallions would score four of the next six points including an offensive rebound and putback of a Seabrook miss by Ozuna at the 13:30 mark for a 51-26 lead.

From that point until the end of the game, Corpus Christi outscored G-Force by a 2 to 1 margin with a 24-12 showing. The game closing run included a three pointer from the right wing at the 11:56 mark for a 51-29 score. G-Force would get a score from Barr on a baseline jumper from the right side to cap a 4-1 mini-run that made the score, 55-30. Corpus Christi then put together a 9-4 spurt that included a three pointer from the right wing that closed the gap to 59-39 at the 5:19 mark. The East Brunswick based team continued to battle and play hard to finish with an 11-4 tear for the 63-50 final.
