South River Boys Basketball Team Handles South Amboy In Scrimmage

SOUTH RIVER, NJ–The Rams boys basketball team scrimmaged South Amboy today in South River and won four of the five quarters.

South River looks to be a speedy team this year since they sorely lack height, and used the fast break very effectively against the Governors, which lost a lot of players to graduation from last season’s team, which reached the quarterfinals of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament in 2007-08. The Guvs have no seniors on this year’s team, and lost four of five starters from last season.

The Rams are in a similar situation this season as well. They lost valuable team leaders, and starters Jimmy Witkowski and Eddie Dumas to graduation and will be looking to underclassmen to lead the team this season.

Juniors Brandon Walsh and Shawn Fenton will be expected to step up big for South River and indeed are on the right path as both paced the Rams in scoring today — Walsh netting 17 points (including three 3 pointers), while Fenton scored 10 or 11 points (unconfirmed reports had him near 20 points) and coming up big in rebounding.

Xavier Foster and Dino Silva also contributed today – Silva had a good game scoring several points on lay ups along with a three pointer, but he needs to develop a more “controlled” style of play to be effective game after game – especially if he’s in the starting lineup.

The Rams have several scrimmages next week – although I can only make the home scrimmage next Friday, I will still post results on the others thanks to my top notch reporting crew.
