Winter Storm Lurks As Opening Day Nears

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–With a bit more than 24 hours remaining until tip-off of all the opening night games on the Greater Middlesex Conference Boys Basketball schedule, the National Weather Service Office in Mount Holly has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Middlesex County, and a Winter Storm Watch for Somerset and Union Counties.

While it may look tranquil and sunny outside right now, a storm is getting its act together over the Central Plains region of the United States, and is expected to move over New Jersey and the rest of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states on Friday. Unlike the most recent storm system that moved through the area, this one will have more moisture to work with, and that will result in more precipitation this time around. Here in Northwestern Middlesex County, New Jersey, snowfall amounts are expected to be between 3 to 5 inches with sleet mixed in from the time the snow starts falling around daybreak on Friday to late Friday evening.

Meanwhile, over in nearby Northern Somerset County, 3 to 6 inches of the white stuff is expected with a quarter inch layer of ice on top of all that. However, if temperatures warm up enough where a change over to rain occurs in both these areas, snow and ice accumulations will be held down. The most recent storm on Tuesday, brought with it 0.45 inches of rain from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon. Some of that came in the form of the most significant snowfall yet here in the Central Jersey area. GMC Hoops has been online for nine seasons, and never had an opening day schedule of games cancelled due to snow, or other bad weather.
