South River @ Timothy Christian–December 20, 2008

Timothy Christian Cruises Past South River, 56-34

PISCATAWAY, NJ–The Rams boys basketball team took right up where they left off at the end of last season – with a loss. In their opening game of the 2008-09 season, South River was beat by a scrappy and physical Timothy Christian team by a score of 56-34. Timothy Christian, which is set to join the GMC Gold for the 2010-11 season, exploited all the Rams’ flaws and fully used them to their advantage. South River encountered difficulties managing the press right off the bat in the first quarter. As a result, a number of turnovers allowed Timothy Christian to take a 16-7 lead after one period of play.

TCS took advantage of the height it had over the Rams, and put the ball inside continously while clogging up the middle on the defensive side of the ball to turn away potential Rams’ baskets. South River was outmuscled throughout the game, and had problems taking care of the basketball as Timothy Christian’s swarming defense made things look ugly at times. The Tigers, which currently compete in the Patriot Conference with the likes of Wardlaw Hartridge, Pennington, Ranney, and Gill St. Bernards, built up a 29-13 lead at the intermission. South River did shave a couple points off the lead as the Rams trailed 38-24 after three quarters, but the Tigers never let the Rams get any closer, winning by a final score of 56-34.

Brandon Walsh, struggled at times in this contest, but still managed to score 10 points on four field goals, and two foul shots. Shawn Fenton led the way for the Rams with 14 points including 12 from the free throw line. South River falls to 0-1 to start the season, and will enter conference play on Monday when it travels to another part of Piscataway to take on the Raiders of Piscataway Vo-Tech. Meanwhile, Timothy Christian starts off at 1-0, and takes on a future GMC Gold opponent in Perth Amboy Tech on Monday afternoon.
