Thoughts On A Final Top Ten In 2008-09

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–With the season wrapping up tonight, I glanced at the Star-Ledger’s final Middlesex County Top Ten this season that was just printed several days ago, and I agree with most of it except for one little thing. I think Spotswood should go ahead of Sayreville for the ninth spot in the poll. The Chargers deserve it. Both Spotswood and Sayreville did play East Brunswick and Monroe, and the Chargers beat both squads on the road while Sayreville was 2-1 against the Bears (1-0) and the Falcons (1-1).

Spotswood won 20 games, and defeated the likes of East Brunswick, Monroe, Middlesex, North Plainfield, Bound Brook, and Governor Livingston. The only negative is that the Chargers lost three of their six games to Bishop Ahr, and two to Middlesex including a thrilling sectional semifinal in the Central Jersey Group II State Tournament (54-48). The only other team Spotswood lost to was Gill St. Bernard’s of Pepack-Gladstone in Somerset County, which was 17-10 overall on the season, and ranked sixth in their area by the Ledger.

So, here’s a preliminary GMC Hoops Final Top Ten for the 2008-09 season:

1. Piscataway (24-6)
2. St. Joseph’s (24-4)
3. Cardinal McCarrick (20-7)
4. Monroe (21-7)
5. Colonia (20-6)
6. J.P. Stevens (18-9)
7. Bishop Ahr (15-6)
8. Middlesex (21-7)
9. Spotswood (20-6)
10. Sayreville (17-8)

Other teams earning consideration: East Brunswick, Metuchen, Dunellen, South Plainfield, Carteret, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, Woodbridge, Old Bridge, Perth Amboy, Perth Amboy Tech, and East Brunswick Tech.
