Some Rivalry Games Mark The GMC Football Week Four Landscape

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–This Friday and Saturday, the fourth week of the Greater Middlesex Conference Football schedule will get underway with 12 games involving teams from the league. Of the 12 games, four are traditional rivalry games including Sayreville at Old Bridge on Friday night, Metuchen at Highland Park on Saturday, J.F. Kennedy at Colonia on Saturday, and Cardinal McCarrick at Spotswood on Saturday.

The game between the Bombers and the Knights also has more at stake as both teams head into the contest with unbeaten 3-0 records. Sayreville is ranked 16th in the Star-Ledger Top 20 while Old Bridge is ranked fifth in the latest GMC Football Top Ten on this web site. On Saturday, one of the oldest rivalries in Middlesex County will take place as the Owls of Highland Park will host Metuchen. These two teams have played each other 73 times over the years with Highland Park having a decisive edge in the series (55-17-1). However, both of these teams will be fighting for top dog in the GMC Gold, and have a tendency to put up a lot of points.

Kennedy of Iselin will travel over to Colonia for a matinee game between neighborhood rivals. Both teams are a combined 1-4 to start the season, but you can throw that out the window when it comes to bragging rights. This game also is important since it counts toward the GMC Blue standings. The Patriots will be playing in their first division game while the Mustangs will be playing in their third (1-1). Finally, we have Cardinal McCarrick and Spotswood, which have been long time rivals in basketball dating back to their days in the GMC Gold in the late 1980s and early 90s.
