Some Interesting Results On Opening Night

Good evening everyone. If you haven’t read the home page, I was at Perth Amboy High School for the site’s annual Freshmen, JV, and Varsity tripleheader to kick off the season. What a finale too! A great way to start off the 2009-10 season. I will have more thoughts on the Piscataway-Perth Amboy game in a little while. However, I wanted to mention some other games that were worth talking about on this first night of the GMC Boys Basketball season.

In the GMC Gold, there were two games that struck me as interesting. First, in the afternoon, Amboy Tech picked up right where it left off last season by defeating East Brunswick Tech in East Brunswick (46-43). The Patriots only won by three, but it was their second straight win at EBVT. If you recall, the Pats defeated the Tigers in the Quarterfinal round of the 2009 Central Jersey Group I State Tournament.

Another game in the Gold Division that really caught my eye was the contest in South Amboy between the Guvs and the Destroyers. Dunellen appeared to be the favorite to win the Gold while South Amboy looked like a third or fourth place finish. However, with Mark Truhan as coach, and a healthy Joe Charmello, there could be joy again in Guv Country. DHS came away with a hard fought, 50-49 decision over the Governors.

Moving up to the White Division, second ranked Monroe got a scare at Colonia as the Patriots only lost by three, 60-57. Might not be too much of a surprise since Colonia is pre-season ranked fifth. However, the Falcons are much more experienced and deeper, which is probably why they ultimately found a way to win.

Meanwhile, in the GMC Red, Old Bridge went into Woodbridge, and won by six. Now, to many this may not seem to be that big a deal, but the Barrons defeated the Knights twice last season. In all fairness to WHS though, Old Bridge is a more veteran team this season. However, expect both teams to have a shot at making the states come February.
