School Budget Votes May Impact Sports In GMC

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–It has been two days since voters in Middlesex County voiced their thoughts on the budgets of 24 districts throughout the county. In a higher than usual voter turnout on Tuesday, voters throughout Middlesex County as well as the rest of the State of New Jersey rejected school budgets. In Middlesex County alone, 15 of the 24 districts voted to reject their school budget as well as in some cases, vote out incumbents.

Statewide, 58.4 percent of all school district budgets were rejected by voters. It was the highest failure rate reported since the NJEA began keeping track in 1976. The impact on towns all across GMC country could be very significant, especially in the area of sports. A number of schools around the GMC may have to cut back on programs. For example, Woodbridge may have to cut Middle School and Freshmen sports programs. GMC Hoops will be closely monitoring the fallout from this in the upcoming months.
