NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ–Last Friday, the World Cup got underway with 32 nations including the host country, South Africa, and the United States battling for soccer’s holy grail. The U.S. began pool play with a very difficult matchup against England on Saturday. On the USA soccer team’s roster is a former boys hoops standout from the GMC. Goalie, Tim Howard, who has played for the popular club team, Manchester United, played basketball at North Brunswick High School. After transferring from Montclair-Kimberley to NBTHS for his sophomore year in 1994-95, Howard, who was a very athletic player, was on the varsity for the Raiders in each of his final three years including the North Brunswick team that won the 1997 GMCT Championship over St. Joseph’s. In that tourney, Howard was selected to the All GMCT Team.
