2010 Summer Prime Time Shootout–Capsules–Day Two–August 7th

ALLENTOWN, NJ–On Saturday night, GMC Hoops traveled over to Allentown High School in the Upper Freehold District of Monmouth County to take in the final two sets of games from the second day of action in the 2010 Summer Prime Time Shootout. This was the third straight summer that the site covered this event, and the fourth time since the site was launched back in 2000. The site was able to get the results on all the games played on this day, and has more detailed info on four of the contests. You can read them below.

Shabazz vs. William Allen (PA)

William Allen started off their appearance at the Summer Prime Time Shootout in fine fashion with a solid victory over Shabazz of Newark. The Bulldogs rallied from being 26-17 down with a 10-4 run to pull within three at 30-27 before William Allen scored on a dunk with 20 seconds to go in the half for a 32-27 halftime lead. Allen then outscored Shabazz by a 29-17 margin in the second half for a 61-44 victory. The Pennsylvania school ended the day at 2-0 while Shabazz finished at 0-2.

Cherokee vs. Trenton

It was another tough loss for the Chiefs of Cherokee as the Tornadoes of Trenton a late entry into the event after Monsignor McClancy from New York pulled out. After Trenton Central got an unconventional three point play for a 21-20 lead with 38.70 seconds to go in the first half, Cherokee scored the final five points including a layup at the 19.5 second mark, and a three pointer from the left side with 0.06 seconds to play in the half for a 25-21 lead. Trenton began the second half with an 8-2 run to take a 29-27 lead, and went up by four as the Tornadoes extended the run to 12-4. Cherokee responded with a 6-0 run over a span of 2:25 to take a 35-33 lead, but Trenton closed the contest with a 16-9 spurt to get the 49-44 victory. Trenton Central started the shootout at 2-0 while the Chiefs finished up at 1-3.

Nazareth vs. Allentown

In a game that had a low scoring first half, the Kingmen from Nazareth of the New York City Catholic League, broke away from a slim halftime lead with a 25-13 showing in the final 20 minutes for the 41-25 victory. The game had three lead changes and three ties in the first 9:39 before Nazareth went on a decisive 15-6 run over a span of 19:13 to take a 23-14 lead. From there, the Kingsman continued to pull away en route to a 41-25 win. Nazareth, which lost to Piscataway in an earlier game, ended up 1-1 on the day while Allentown was still searching for its first victory of the event.

Plainfield vs. Hyde (CT)

The Plainfield Cardinals no longer had standout incoming senior Tyrone Johnson, who transferred to Montrose Christian during the summer, but they still have promising incoming juniors in Sekou Harris and Justin Sears along with incoming senior Allen Brown. The Cards were entangled in perhaps the most entertaining game of the four watched by GMC Hoops on Saturday night. There were several big swings in momentum in this one as both teams battled to a 24-24 tie at halftime, and had a few lead changes in the second half.

Plainfield held a 37-34 lead with 12:48 left only to have Hyde put together a 10-3 run over a span of 7:16 to take a 44-40 lead with 5:32 left. The Cardinals then got a score to draw within two before Brown drew a charge at the 3:49 mark. Sears then dished to a teammate for a layup, and a 44-44 tie with 3:22 remaining. Hyde took a 47-44 lead with a three pointer at the 2:48 mark, but following a Plainfield timeout with 2:12 to go, Brown scored a layup as he was fouled at the one minute mark, and scored again on a layup at the 28.9 second mark after his teammates forced a turnover with 36.7 seconds to go.

Brown then forced a steal himself, and drew a foul, but even though he missed the front end of a one and one with 12.3 seconds to go, the Cards were still able to pull out the hard fought 50-47 victory as Sears sealed the win with two free throws at the 1.5 second mark. Plainfield started the shootout at 2-0 while Hyde began at 0-2.

GMC Hoops will be posting capsules on the four games seen on Sunday tomorrow in the blog.
