New Brunswick’s Cook To Attend New Jersey City University

Three Year Varsity Player For New Brunswick To Play Division III College Hoops

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–On Sunday, GMC Hoops learned from the Star-Ledger that New Brunswick High School boys basketball standout, Jaquan Cook will attend New Jersey City University next fall.

Cook, who also played football for the Zebras in the fall, began his rise through the NBHS basketball ranks as a freshman when he led the freshmen team to a fourth place finish at the 2008 Perth Amboy/GMC Freshmen Tournament as well as an impressive showing in the Cardinal McCarrick Freshmen Christmas Tournament earlier that season.

After those accomplishments, Cook came up to the varsity as a sophomore, and over the next three seasons, he helped resurrect a basketball program that had struggled for several years after being among the elite teams in the GMC from 2000 to 2006. Prior to his arrival, New Brunswick was 1-17 overall in 2007-08. His sophomore year, the Zebras were only 3-19. Then, in 2009-10, NBHS broke through with 15 victories and an appearance in the GMCT Elite Eight and the state playoffs for the first time since 2006. This past season, the team went 13-11, and lost in the opening round of both the GMCT and the state playoffs.

During his last two years, Cook earned player of the week honors from GMC Hoops and the Star-Ledger, and also was named Most Valuable Player of the recent GMCBCA Senior All-Star Game at Perth Amboy on April 20th. This past season, Cook averaged just under 18 points and 8 rebounds per game despite being sidelined with an injury at one point. He ended his career at NBHS with 877 points.
