Sacred Heart Girls Earn First Win Of Summer By Defeating Monroe, 37-25

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–On Thursday night, GMC Hoops made its second appearance of the summer at the Raritan Bay Summer League at the South Amboy Middle/High School. The site managed to get most of the results from the games that have been played so far over the first two weeks of the summer. It also managed to sit down and take in some of the action for the first time this season. The site took in the finale of the evening between Sacred Heart of South Amboy and Monroe in a game from the Girls Division.

Sacred Heart broke into the win column for the first time this summer with a 37-25 victory over the Lady Falcons. The South Amboy school connected on 16 field goals including five three pointers, and two free throws in the victory. Monroe connected on eleven field goals including a three while going 2 of 6 from the line in the first half.

The contest was close early on with the game going back and forth for the first nine plus minutes. However, Sacred Heart was able to take control for good with a decisive 13-2 spurt to take a double digit lead late in the first half en route to the win. The site picked up the action with the score tied at 4-4 with 15:24 to go in the opening half. Sacred Heart took a 6-4 lead on a bucket at the 14:21 mark.  Monroe tied the game at 6-6 on a pull-up jumper with 12:49 to go in the first half.

After Sacred Heart got a basket and a foul at the 12:00 mark, Monroe went ahead with a three point bomb from the right wing at the 11:36 mark for a 9-8 lead.  On Sacred Heart’s next possession, it took the lead at 11-9 on a three of its own from the left wing.  Halfway through the contest, there were three lead changes and three ties.

The three point bombs kept flying as Sacred Heart took the biggest led of the game at 14-9 with eight minutes to go in the half.  The South Amboy school banked in a trey from the top of the key for the five point lead.  After Monroe got a basket underneath by Amelia Mendoza at the 6:46 mark, Sacred Heart scored the next seven points including a bank shot from the right side, a three pointer that banked in from the top of the key, and then a steal of an errant pass for a layup, and a 21-11 lead.  The South Amboy school had outscored Monroe by a 13-2 margin over a span of nearly seven minutes.

Sacred Heart took a 23-13 lead into the intermission.  Monroe only scored four points and had one field goal over the last 11:36 of the first half.  The Lady Falcons were 2 of 6 from the foul line, and made four field goals and a three while Sacred Heart made seven field goals and three treys in the first 20 minutes.  Monroe would fight back in the second half to keep the score from getting away from it, but Sacred Heart maintained an eight to ten point lead for much of the second half.

The Lady Falcons made six field goals in the second half while Sacred Heart made two threes, four field goals, and two foul shots to gain a two point edge in the final 20 minutes for a 37-25 victory.
