The Bears went on a 14-9 run over a span of 5:03 to take a 51-40 lead, and then withstood a rally by the Patriots for a 58-48 win.

East Brunswick Wins Third Straight By Downing Amboy Tech, 58-48

East Brunswick’s youngsters, comprised of players that were on the school’s JV and Freshmen rosters this past season, are getting valuable playing time against other squads at the Middlesex County College Summer League. On Tuesday night, the Bears squared off against Perth Amboy Tech, which was without the services of top player, Rashad Adams, but still were formidable with the likes of Malcolm Batts.

Soon to be sophomores Owen Summerer and Carl Taylor scored back to back layins while Taylor swiped a steal that led to a one of two showing from the foul line to highlight a 14-9 run that put East Brunswick up 51-40 with 5:27 remaining. Amboy Tech, which was outscored by a margin of 21-17 over the final 10:30, went on a 8-2 spurt over a span of 4:53 to close the gap to 53-48 with a little more than a half minute remaining. However, the Patriots were unable to get any closer as EB scored the final four points including 3 of 4 from the foul line as well as a putback to come away with the 53-48 win.

Batts did what he could to help Amboy Tech’s cause. The soon to be senior scored eight points over the final ten and a half minutes of the contest. He made a floater at the 8:02 mark, a runner that got a kind bounce at the 3:39 mark, and then a layin at the 34 second mark to cap the Patriots 8-2 spurt, and narrow the deficit to 53-48. Unfortunately, he and his teammates shot themselves in the foot by not boxing out on missed free throws that resulted in scores off follows at the 1:19 mark and the 31 second mark.

East Brunswick was only 4 of 10 from the foul line over the final 5:27, but Amboy Tech couldn’t take advantage. With the win, EB, which won the MCC Summer League two years ago, and was the top seed in last year’s playoffs, improved to 3-0 while Perth Amboy Tech dropped to 1-3 on the season. GMC Hoops plans to be out at the Middlesex County College Summer League for the 7:00 PM game next Tuesday night.
