GMC Gridiron Preview–Week Twelve–Sayreville @ South Brunswick–Central Jersey Group IV Semifinals

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–On Friday night, GMC Gridiron plans to head down to South Brunswick High School to see an state playoff rematch of an early season showdown in the GMC Red between top ranked South Brunswick and third ranked Sayreville. The Vikings have won the GMC Red outright for the first time ever, and got at least a share of the division crown for the second time since 2008. SBHS defeated Sayreville in the season opener, and have yet to lose. The Bombers have changed some things since then, and have won 8 of their last 9 games. Here are the particulars for this game:

Weather Forecast–South Brunswick at 7:00 PM EDT on Friday night

The leaves have come off the trees in earnest over the past 10 days or so. Temperatures were warm until about midweek when a storm system moved in to bring some rain on Wednesday and Thursday. After that, temperatures took a tumble as high pressure moved in with much cooler and drier air from Canada. Temperatures were unable to get out of the 40s all day today.

I went out for a walk at about noon, and did that for about an hour and a half. You could feel a more significant change in the air. Skies were clear and blue with no clouds. Too bad that the fall foliage passed its peak last week. The Vantage Pro 2 forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies with little temperature change. See more details on the latest weather in the GWC Blog and Journal.

The forecast for Friday night at South Brunswick High School from the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly calls for mostly clears and much colder conditions than earlier this week. Low is expected to be around 28 degrees after a high of 45 on Friday afternoon. So, no need for rain gear, but bundle up because it is going to get quite cold in the second half.

Game Outlook

This has been a highly anticipated matchup since early in the season. The Vikings got a late fourth quarter touchdown from Jevon Tyree to pull out the 14-7 victory over the Bombers. Sayreville, the defending sectional champ and this year’s fifth seed, traveled down to Jackson Memorial, and pulled out a 21-13 victory. Meanwhile, top seeded South Brunswick rolled to a 63-14 rout of Hillsborough in the opening round.

South Brunswick is looking to keep its historic season going. The Vikes are 9-0 heading into this contest. Sayreville has won 8 of its last 9 since losing to SBHS on opening weekend. The only defeat was a 28-0 decision at home to Piscataway two weeks ago. The Bombers have changed some things a bit by spreading out the Wing-T offense, and putting Isaiah Cureton back at quarterback. Sayreville’s defense has also improved a great deal since the start of the season.

The Vikings have been playing with more and more confidence since winning its first two games of the season over Sayreville and Piscataway. Knocking off the top two teams coming into this season will do that for you. There is quite a bit of athletic ability, talent, speed, and depth. All it needed was breaking through the barrier of defeating those teams to set up this season’s run. In addition, South Brunswick has a defense that has done a good job of shutting down their opponents key weapons on the offensive side of the ball. They will have to watch for the adjustments Sayreville has made since their last meeting.
