Ramblers Impress In Three Periods Against Hudson County School

CARTERET, NJ–One thing that impressed me a great deal during Carteret’s Scrimmage against Bayonne is how well the starters against Bayonne for three periods.  The Ramblers grabbed a 13-2 lead in the first period, and despite losing the second and third quarters, they only lost them by slim margins (Bayonne won the second 14-11, and the third 14-12).  CHS didn’t back down from playing physical against the Bees.  Kevin Van Dyke was banging away with Bayonne’s big men down low, and it did frustrate the Bees from time to time.

Although he had his shot blocked in the second quarter, Avery Carter went back to the basket, and converted a traditional three point play.  He also let the Bayonne players know about it.  Carter led the Ramblers with 10 points over the two periods the starters played while Tanveer Dosanjh chipped in with 7 during the span.  Joey Nigro played very smart at the point guard position while Juwuan Colston came off the bench to contribute with nice play making.  Since the days that Dave Turco coached at the school, the Ramblers have made defense a cornerstone of their success.  Third year head coach, Herman White has continued to emphasize this to his players.

Over the first three periods, Carteret’s defense made Bayonne score from only the halfcourt most of the time.  The Bees had to basically earn everything they got during that span.  The Ramblers also demonstrated great hustle by getting back on defense to prevent easy baskets, and diving for loose balls.  Carter got back on a couple of occasions to thwart scoring attempts by Bayonne.    Not to be left out, the visitors from Hudson County played well on defense as well with 5 deflections, 4 steals, and 2 blocks in the second period.  The Bees also had 4 steals and 2 deflections in the third.  Even though, Bayonne held a 2-1 edge in quarters won, Carteret still had a 36-30 lead heading into the final period of action.

The Ramblers weren’t concerned about that though.  Coach White wanted to give his reserves a good deal of playing time, and it provided a good learning experience for them.  It didn’t show on the scoreboard with Bayonne winning the final frame by a 34-6 margin to win three of the four quarters, and earn a 64-42 advantage overall in the exhibition.  However, the reserve Ramblers will learn from this, and be much stronger when competition gets underway in the GMC Blue.  In the long run, their playing time here will bring a ton of benefits.  Since the days of Jose Rodriguez and Wilfredo Fuerte, Carteret has been in constant search for a consistent threat from three point range.  Al Tampa did give some perimeter scoring during the Ramblers resurgence back in 2007 and 2008, but nobody else has been able to provide help from beyond the arc to support the solid defense, strong inside play, and a transition game.

Nevertheless, you can expect CHS to be a contender again for the GMC Blue crown along with Bishop Ahr, Spotswood, and Kennedy.
