Junior Barrons Made Up Of Four Younger Brothers Of GMC Standouts
WOODBRIDGE, NJ–On Monday, GMC Hoops had the opportunity to take in the contest from the Round of 16 in the 2012 East Brunswick/GMC JV Tournament at Woodbridge High School between the sixth seeded Junior Barrons, and the 11th seeded Junior Eagles of Cardinal McCarrick.
It was the rubber match between these two schools this season. McCarrick won the season opener in South Amboy on December 16th by the score of 46-38 while Woodbridge won the second meeting between the two teams in January. This time around, the Junior Barrons won again thanks to a team effort that was all in the family.
Trailing 4-3 early in the first quarter, Woodbridge went on a 10-0 run that included a three from guard Colin Figueredo, and a floater by Jared Pearson to take a 13-4 lead. The Junior Barrons would never trail after that, and actually increased the lead to 26 late in the third quarter before winning 69-42. Pearson ended up with a team high of 19 points while Khalil Jordan chipped in with 15.
Pearson and Figueredo are just two of the four siblings on the Woodbridge JV squad. Jared Pearson is the younger brother of FDU bound, and WHS 1,000 point scorer Kyle Pearson while Colin Figueredo is the younger brother of recent Woodbridge graduate Kyle Figueredo, and Bishop Ahr standout Derek Figueredo. Colin’s father also played hoops at Woodbridge back in the mid to late 70s.
Not to be left out, Andrew Hughes is also on the JV roster at WHS. Hughes, the younger brother of Keith Hughes Jr., and son of Carteret all time leading scorer, Keith Hughes Sr., also played in the contest, and scored four points in the second half. In the first meeting between these two schools on opening night, Andrew Hughes scored 12 points including 11 in the second half. Freshman Zaire Robinson was also added to the squad for this game. Robinson is the younger brother of recent JFK graduate, Daishon Robinson.
The Junior Barrons went on to lose to third seeded East Brunswick in the quarterfinals of the EB JV Tournament on Tuesday night. McCarrick also had some family ties in this game as well. Aaron Lewis, a sophomore at the school, is the nephew of varsity head coach, Joe Lewis.
