GMC Gridiron–Week Two–Quick Picks–Saturday Afternoon

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–The second week of the 2013 Greater Middlesex Conference football season will conclude on Saturday afteroon with four games on the schedule including three crossover games against the Shore Conference, and a matchup in the GMC Blue Division.

South River @ Metuchen–-The only conference game of the day comes in the Blue Division as the Rams visit the Dawg Pound.  Metuchen gave Dunellen a good fight before losing last week while South River won its game with Highland Park before the first quarter ended.  This game should be in doubt a bit longer than that, but the Rams should come out on top.  Prediction:  South River wins, 31-20.

North Brunswick @ Colts Neck-–The Raiders of North Brunswick only managed three first downs in the loss to Monroe last Saturday night (55-6).  Now, NBTHS has to travel to play a Colts Neck team coming off a 45-0 win over Toms River East, and still having a lot of firepower following a 9-2 campaign in 2012.  Cougars should roll in this one against a Raider team in the midst of rebuilding.  Prediction:    Colts Neck wins, 41-7.

Keansburg @ Spotswood–The Chargers enter their home opener with some momentum after defeating a game Middlesex team on the road last Saturday afternoon (20-7).  Meanwhile, Keansburg, which is rebuilding after a successful run last year, lost in its opener to an improved Mater Dei squad (34-14).  Spotswood is looking to challenge both Dunellen and South River for the Blue Division crown.  Prediction:  Spotswood wins, 21-20.

Cardinal McCarrick @ Mater Dei–The last time that these two teams met at Waterfront Park in week two a year ago, the Eagles ralled from a 25-6 early second quarter deficit to defeat the Seraphs.  However, this looks to be a much different year.  Mater Dei, which looked to already be improving last year, is even better this year, and it showed as the Seraphs rolled past Keansburg on opening weekend (34-14).  Meanwhile, McCarrick only has 21 players including lone key returner Arnold Arnaldy, and lost to Point Beach (41-6) at home in week one.  Prediction:  Mater Dei wins, 28-12.

GMC Gridiron will not be attending any of the games on Saturday, but could catch some of the college football contest between Princeton and Lafayette.
