GMC Hoops Slideshow–January 31, 2014–Old Bridge @ Monroe–GMC Crossover Clash

Here is a slideshow from photos of the action from a GMC Crossover game between Old Bridge and Monroe at the end of January 2014. Trailing 8-4 early in the first period, Monroe embarked on a 13-4 tear to take a 17-12 lead before the Knights got a three pointer to end the period. Then, the Purple Birds opened up the second with 8 of the first 9 points to take a 25-16 lead, and maintained that advantage at 36-27 going into the locker room at halftime. Senior guard, Chris Germano led the Falcons with 8 points while teammate Tyler Salzer chipped in with 7.

However, over the final two periods of regulation and overtime, Old Bridge outscored Monroe by a margin of 39-20 as Tyler Drews scored 15 of his game high 23 points while teammate Luis Cruz chipped in with 9 of his 15. Drews scored 7 of his points and handed out an assist in the overtime as the Knights outscored the Falcons in the extra session by a 13-3 margin to round out the 66-56 victory. Kasaun Figueroa added 10 points in the win for OB.

Trailing 46-41 at one point in the fourth, Old Bridge went on a 10-2 run over a span of about 3:19 as sophomore Zach Attianese sparked the run with a layup and then the Knights capped the run to take a three point lead at 51-48 as Cruz got a layup at the 2:31 mark followed by a steal for a layup by Drews with about 2:00 left in regulation. Jair Davis, who had accounted for Monroe’s only scoring on a leaner from the left side that banked in at the 3:24, struck again with 1:41 to play on a three pointer to tie the score at 51-51.

Monroe then got the ball back and called timeout with 1:26 to play. Following the stoppage, the Falcons set up a play for Matt Cocorikis, who scored with 1:07 to go in regulation for a 53-51 lead. Old Bridge found a way to force overtime though when they scored on a putback 3.6 seconds left after several offensive rebounds in the waning moments of regulation. In the overtime, Old Bridge scored the first six points as sophomore Connor Romano, Cruz, and Drews all scored on layups for a 59-53 lead with 2:51 left. Drews then added two more drives for layups, and a 1 of 2 showing from the line before dishing to Figueroa for a layup and OB’s final points of the night.
