Hilltoppers Surge In Second Half To Roll Past Bombers, 72-47

UNION, NJ–After a competitive first half, St. Mary’s of Elizabeth outscored Sayreville by nearly a two to one margin in the second half for a 25 point victory on the second night of action at the 2014 Kean University Spring League at Harwood Arena.

The Bombers only trailed by one at 8-7 about five minutes into the game, but then St. Mary’s scored 10 of the next 14 points to take an 18-11 lead, and eventually increased its advantage to eight at 34-26 going into the intermission. Then, in the second half, the Hilltoppers outscored Sayreville by a margin of 38-21 to come away with the 72-47 win.

Over the first seven minutes of the second half, St. Mary’s opened up a 54-36 lead thanks to a 20-10 outburst. Myles Hartsfield and Mike Valentin did what they could to keep the Bombers in the game, but they were outgunned by the Hilltoppers onslaught. St. Mary’s, which lost at the buzzer to Piscataway on Monday night, led by as much as 27 points late in the second half.
