GMC Hoops Game Capsule–Bishop Ahr vs. Matawan–EB Team Camp–June 10, 2014

Weiler and Astarita Lead Trojans During Decisive Late Run

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ–On Tuesday night, the Bishop Ahr Trojans capped a solid day by splitting its two games thanks to a good win over a Matawan team that is coming off a Central Jersey Group II championship in 2013-14, and has two of its best players returning for the 2014-15 campaign. In perhaps the closest game of the evening at EBHS, Bishop Ahr and Matawan were tied at 27-27 at the start of the second half, and both teams continued to have a back and forth battle in the game’s final 20 minutes.

Neither team let the other get too far ahead as the game remained very close until the very end. With the game tied at 40-40 with several minutes to play, Kevin Krolick got a score from the right side to put Ahr in front by two. Matawan responded with the next four points for a 44-42 lead with two minutes to play. Bishop Ahr would come away with the victory thanks to a 6-0 run over the final 1:42. Tom Weiler sparked the rally with a layup in traffic to tie the score at 44-44. About a minute later, Weiler drew a foul, and made both free throws for a 46-44 lead with just over 30 seconds to play. Following a miss at the other end by the Huskies Jason Dunne, Ahr got the ball to Pat Astarita, who was fouled, and made both free throws with 21 seconds left for a 48-44 lead.

Bishop Ahr went on to win by the final score of 48-44. The Trojans lost earlier in the evening to Old Bridge by the score of 53-44 thanks to a 12-2 spurt by the Knights midway through the second half.
