GMC Hoops Game Notes–South Plainfield @ Sayreville–White Division Clash–January 3, 2015

PARLIN, NJ–On Saturday evening, GMC Hoops traveled over to Sayreville War Memorial High School to take in a GMC White Division contest between the hometown Bombers and South Plainfield.  Led by Lamont Williams and Jordan Hankerson, who each scored a game high 21 points including two threes, South Plainfield was able to knock off the Bombers, which were ranked in the GMC Pre-Season Top Ten in some area polls.  Trailing 53-48 after three, the Tigers outscored Sayreville by a 20-10 margin in the fourth to come away with the 68-63 victory.  Mike Valentin matched Williams and Hankerson for game high with 21 for Sayreville including five three pointers while Holy Cross bound Jehvye Floyd collected a triple-double of 15 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 blocks.  Below are game notes from the action:

First Quarter

5:15–South Plainfield on a 5-2 run after a jumper by Devon Dabel to take an early 7-4 lead.

3:06 left in the first quarter and Sayreville leads 10-9 on a three from by Mike Valentin off a tap out of a lob pass by Jehvye Floyd.

2:00–South Plainfield takes a 12-10 lead on a three by Lamont Williams.

0:00–End of first and Sayreville leads 16-14 thanks to a 6-2 run including a power move from the right baseline by Jehvye Floyd off a dish by Valentin.


Second Quarter

6:17 left in the first half and Sayreville calls time leading 18-16.

4:39 left in the first half and Sayreville leads 22-18 after a putback by SP’s Jordan Hankerson.

3:22 to go in the half and Sayreville ends an SPHS 6-0 run on a three from the right side by Kristopher Tookes for a 25-22 lead.  Sayreville has drawn 3 charges including 2 by Justin Santos.

3:00 left in the first half and there is a timeout with SP now leading 27-25 after a 5-0 run including a three point play by Hankerson.

0:00–Game has just gone to the half and South Plainfield leads 35-30 thanks in part to a circus shot late in the second by Ephraim Johnson.  South Plainfield scoring in the first half:  Jordan Hankerson leads the Tigers with 10 including 4 of 6 at the line.  Sayreville first half scoring:  Jayson DeMild leads all scorers with 11 points.  Mike Valentin has 8 and Jehvye Floyd has two fouls.


Third Quarter

5:05 left in the third and SP calls timeout after a short hook in the paint by Sayreville’s Zack Alessi closes the gap to 42-40.  Sayreville opens half on a 10-7 run.

3:01 left in the third and Sayreville ties it at 45-45 on a tap pass off an inbounds underneath by Floyd for to Alessi for a layup.  Bombers have scored 5 of the last 8 points.

0:56 seconds left in the third and Sayreville now leads 51-45 on a rebound of a missed SP shot and a coast to coast for a dunk by Jehyve Floyd.

0:00–End of fourth and Sayreville leading 53-48.  Bombers outscored SP, 23-13 in third.  SP hanging around, but Floyd starting to heat up.


Fourth Quarter

5:07 left in the game and South Plainfield calls timeout after a transition layup from the right side by Lamont Williams ends a near three minute scoring drought and closes the gap to 53-50.

4:27 left in the game and SP ties it at 53-53 on a three from the left wing by Williams off a kickout by Jordan Hankerson.

3:01 left in the game and SP ties it at 59-59 on a layup by Lamont Williams as Sayreville’s Mike Valentin fouls out.  Williams then makes bonus ft for a 60-59 lead.

2:30–Sayreville goes back ahead 61-60 on a putback by Floyd off a missed three pointer by Jayson DeMild.

1:43–Upset in the making at the Bomb Shelter as SP gets a layup from Williams for a 66-61 lead 

42 seconds left and SP calls time with a 68-63 lead after Sayreville missed two fts.

0:00–UPSET CITY!!  South Plainfield upsets Sayreville, 68-63.  Tigers outscored Bombers, 20-10 in fourth quarter.
