Colonia Wins in 5th and 6th Grade Contest; Colts and Roselle Win Thrillers

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–On Friday night, GMC Hoops traveled over to South Amboy Middle-High School to take in action from the 2016 Raritan Bay Summer League, which had a quadrupleheader of games including three from the high school division. The first contest was a game out of the 5th and 6th Grade Division.

Colonia, which had won two games earlier this summer against Old Bridge, took on Our Lady of Victory from Sayreville in a contest from the 5th and 6th Grade Division, and the Patriots cruised to an easy double digit win. Then in the first of three high school division games, the Colts and Jayhawks went at it for the second time this summer, and again it was another battle.

The Colts, based in Colts Neck went down to the wire with the Central Jersey Jayhawks, which has players from several GMC schools including: Bishop Ahr, J.P. Stevens, and Sayreville. With the score tied at 32-32 late in the game, the Colts came up with a basket at the buzzer for the two point win. Next, was another barnburner from the Raritan Bay Summer League’s High School Division.

Trailing 39-37 in the closing seconds, Roselle was able to score to tie the game with 7 seconds remaining. St. Joseph’s by the Sea had a chance to pull out the win in regulation, but a jumper was off the mark as the buzzer sounded, and we went to overtime. In the extra session, the Vikings of St. Joe’s scored off the tip, but Roselle scored 7 of the last 8 points including a go ahead three with 1:42 remaining for the four point victory.

In the nightcap, the Academy of Urban Leadership from Perth Amboy took on Koinonia Academy of Plainfield. With both teams struggling to get into a rhythm, the Jaguars of AUL jumped out to a 12-2 lead over the first 14 minutes of the game thanks to forcing steals for layups off of its full court pressure. However, Koinonia Academy didn’t give up and battled its way back into the game.

The Seraphs scored 7 of the last 11 points of the first half, and limited AUL to just two points over the first 16 minutes or so of the second half while making 5 of 8 from the line, and scoring on three layups to pull within four at 24-20 with just under a minute to play. Unfortunately, Koinonia Academy was unable to get any closer as the Jaguars of AUL closed out the game with a putback and a three for the nine point victory.
