Sayreville’s Henny Mautes eludes a Dickinson defender for a layup in the third period of Monday afternoon’s contest at the 2016 Hamilton Park Summer League in Jersey City. Mautes was a bright spot for the Bombers in a 63-24 loss to Dickinson.

For a good portion of the first half, Sayreville, led by the likes of Henny Mautes, Ope Olaloko, and Bobby Krolick battled with Dickinson of Jersey City. Dickinson, which came into the contest at 9-5, jumped out to a 9-4 lead, and then added another layup to go up by seven with about a minute to go before Sayreville, which was playing without top players, Jahsim Floyd, Ryan O’Leary, Elijah Clark, and Derek Astarita, got the final points of the period to draw within five at 11-6.

Both teams opened the second quarter with scores over nearly the first three minutes for a 13-8 Dickinson lead before a tile in the floor used at the Hamilton Park court got pulled up when Sayreville was trying to score on the break at the 7:04 mark. The Bombers, which entered play on Monday with a 3-12 record at Hamilton Park, continued to stay within striking distance by answering another Dickinson score for a 15-10 Dickinson lead with 4:27 left in the first half.

Then, the Rams broke away for good by scoring 10 unanswered points over a span of 2:45. Many of Dickinson’s scores came in transition off missed shots and turnovers, to take a 25-10 lead with 1:42 remaining in the opening half as Sayreville called for time. Sayreville played a little more respectable the rest of the period thanks to a three pointer from the left wing at the 43 second mark, and then a layup by Olaloko with 15 seconds remaining in the period, but were still outscored 8-5 down the stretch to trail Dickinson, 33-15 at the break.

Dickinson continued to pour it on by opening the second half on a 10-0 run over a span of 5:36 to take a commanding 43-15 lead. Mautes got Sayreville on the board in the third with a three pointer from the right wing at the four minute mark, but the Rams added two more layups for a 47-18 lead with two minutes to go in the third. Dickinson closed out the win by scoring 16 of the last 22 points with Sayreville’s points coming on a three point play by Olaloko and a trey by Mautes. With the 63-24 victory, Dickinson improved to 10-5 on the summer while Sayreville dropped to 3-13.

Shorthanded Bombers Fall to Hoboken, 65-35

Sayreville’s Ope Olaloko powers past a Hoboken defender for a layup in the third period of Monday afternoon’s contest at the 2016 Hamilton Park Summer League in Jersey City. Olaloko, who also had a dunk in the first half, was a bright spot for the Bombers in a 65-35 loss to the Red Wings.

There was no rest for the weary as an undermanned Sayreville squad playing without five of its top returning players from last year, and its top JV player from last year, had to recover quickly following its loss to Dickinson at 4:00 PM. The Bombers were set to play at 5:00 PM versus the Hoboken Red Wings. Once again, Sayreville would be competitive early only to give way to a huge Hoboken surge.

Both teams got off to a slow start with neither team getting a field goal over the first 3:31 of the game. The only points came on a couple free throws by Hoboken for the 2-0 lead. Over the next 3:07 though, the Red Wings began to assert themselves by scoring 8 of the next 10 points for a 10-2 lead. The only points for Sayreville came on a Bobby Krolick layup with 3:22 remaining in the opening period.

Hoboken then added the next six points for a 16-2 lead before Sayreville finished the opening period on a positive note with a three pointer from the left wing at the 31 second mark, and then a breakaway dunk by Olaloko to close the gap to 16-7 after one. Sayreville wouldn’t get any closer though as the Red Wings surged in the second with a 21-2 showing that included many transition scores similar to what Dickinson had in the first game for a 37-9 lead at the half.

Despite scores by Olaloko and Mautes, Sayreville was outscored by a 14-5 margin in the third to trail 51-14. The Bombers did make things respectable against Hoboken’s reserves in the fourth by putting together a 21-14 showing in the final period to close out the 65-35 Hoboken victory. With the victory, the Red Wings improved to 10-9 on the summer while Sayreville dropped to 3-14. The Bombers will be back in action at Hamilton Park on Monday, July 25th with a game against Ferris at 4:00 PM followed by a contest against Moore Catholic at 6:00 PM.
