Old Bridge Downs Wagner of Staten Island; South Brunswick Knocks Off Seton Hall Prep
LINDEN, NJ–On Tuesday night, GMC Hoops traveled up to the Linden P.A.L. To take in action from the 2016 Linden Fall League. There were four games on tap including two involving teams from the Greater Middlesex Conference. Old Bridge took on Wagner while South Brunswick battled Seton Hall Prep.
The Knights of Old Bridge had a 41-35 lead with 2:58 remaining after a three pointer by Will Osvald. However, Wagner rallied back by scoring 7 of the next 8 points including a bank shot at the 1:11 to tie the game at 42-42. Wagner had a chance to take the lead, but failed to make a pair of free throws with 50 seconds left.
Osvald then knocked down his second three in the final three minutes on a jumper from the left wing for a 45-42 lead with 37 seconds left. Old Bridge then added 3 of 4 from the foul line for a six point lead before Wagner knocked down a trey in the closing seconds for a three point victory.
Afterwards, South Brunswick took on Seton Hall Prep, and trailed 6-3 early on before Mike Ugarte and Chris James netted threes while Tavian Alford collected a couple layups during a 11-2 tear that gave the Vikings a 14-8 lead. South Brunswick eventually held a seven point lead, and led 30-24 at the half.
The Pirates of Seton Hall Prep rallied back though with a 16-4 tear that included a layup off an alleyoop pass to take a 40-34 lead with 4:05 left in the third period. The Vikes would fight back though as South Brunswick put together a 28-14 surge the rest of the way that included a couple threes from Ugarte, and two treys by Greg Lee including one with 2:46 remaining to pull out a hard fought, 62-56 win.
In non-conference action, Union Catholic and Bayonne put on an offensive display in the 5:00 PM game. Both teams combined for 184 points in the contest, and only missed two shots in the first period as Union Catholic jumped out to a 33-31 lead. The Vikings went on to win by eight points.
