GMC Hoops Slideshow–December 17, 2016–#7 Bishop Ahr vs. #1 Sayreville—Friends of South Amboy

In the second game of the tripleheader at the 2016 Friends of South Amboy Benefit Showcase, top ranked Sayreville was looking to rebound from its opening night loss to 10th ranked North Brunswick when it took on 7th ranked Bishop Ahr.

The Trojans, which rolled past South River on opening night, got off to a fast start by taking a 9-5 lead behind the scoring of Alex Santiago and Sean Kudelka. Sayreville would battle back though with an 7-0 spurt over the last 3:09 of the first quarter including a three by Ryan O’Leary for a 12-9 lead after one.

Sayreville extended its lead to five at 21-16 by outscoring Ahr by a 9-7 margin over the first 3:14 of the second. Jahsim Floyd led the way with a couple scores. BGA wouldn’t go away though as the Trojans quickly put together a 9-2 rally over the next 2:37 for a 25-23. Kudelka highlighted the run with a jumper from the left side and a putback.

The Bombers would take the lead for good though by scoring the last five points of the first half including a three by Henny Mautes for a 28-25 lead at the break. The game remained close throughout the third with Sayreville leading by as many as five at 35-30 following a Ryan O’Leary jumper at the 4:44 mark. Ahr would close the gap to four at 44-40 at the end of the period on a bucket by Kieran Hodder.

In the fourth quarter, Sayreville puts some distance between itself and Bishop Ahr by going on a 10-7 run capped by a score from Xavier Townes for a 54-47 lead at the 4:45 mark. Ahr would go away though as Santiago and Hodder combined for a slick play that resulted in a Hodder layup to close the gap to 57-51 with 2:38 remaining.

The Bombers would eventually go up by nine late despite three pointers from Santiago and Deontae Crawford, and held on to win, 70-64. Floyd led Sayreville with 17 points while O’Leary chipped in with 13 and Townes and Henny Mautes each added 12. Santiago led Ahr with a game high 18 points while Hodder chipped in with 14 and Crawford and Kudelka each added 13.
