Matawan Defeats Carteret in Tourney Opener, 58-51

Ramblers Suffer First Loss of Season in Holiday Tourney

MATAWAN, NJ–After winning its first four games of the 2016-17 season, the Carteret Ramblers opened play in the Matawan Huskies Classic against the host school. The Huskies had three different players score in double figures to register a 58-51 victory over Carteret.

Michael Dunne and Zaire Jackson each scored 16 points to lead all other scorers while Reggie Tawiah added 15 in the win for Matawan. Kahir Raymond led Carteret in a losing cause with 12 points while Nasseir Moore chipped in with 11. The Ramblers had a 38-24 advantage in points scored inside the arc.

However, Matawan enjoyed an 18-6 edge in points scored from long distance and a 16-7 advantage in points scored from the charity stripe. Dunne scored 11 of his 16 points from the foul line for the Huskies. Both teams had 22 rebounds while Carteret had a 13-10 edge in assists, 12-8 edge in steals, and a 2-0 edge in blocks.

Each team had six different players score in the game. With the victory, Matawan improved to 2-2 overall on the season, and advanced to take on Ocean Township in the semifinals on Wednesday. Carteret dropped to 4-1 on the season, and will now face Tottenville of Staten Island in a consolation game on Wednesday.
