Here are highlights from the action in the nightcap contest between Sayreville and Gill St. Bernards in the first round of games in the 2017 Eric LeGrand Classic played at Roselle Catholic the day after New Year’s.
Sayreville had jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a three pointer and jumper by Henny Mautes. However, Gill responded with a 15-0 run to take a ten point lead, and from that point on, the Bombers were playing catch-up.
Sayreville was able to get within two points on several occasions including 32-30 in the third quarter after a three pointer by Ryan O’Leary, but then Gill got a three pointer while being fouled, and ultimately pushed the lead back up to double digits before winning, 58-49.
Four players scored in double figures for the Bombers including Mautes, O’Leary, and Jahsim Floyd, who each had 12. Xavier Townes chipped in with 11. Paul Mulcahy led all scorers with a game high 14 points for Gill while T.J. Chaney, Alex Shachne, and Evan Storch each added 9 in a winning cause.
