Dent Leads the Way for Chiefs in Big Win on the Road

MONMOUTH JUNCTION, NJ–Entering Tuesday night’s big road match-up at South Brunswick, the seventh ranked Piscataway Chiefs were 2-3 and looking to get a big win to establish momentum in the new year. Two of the three losses suffered by P-Way were each by two points. So, the team was close to getting what it needed.

Meanwhile, top ranked South Brunswick was riding high with five straight wins to start the season including four by an average of almost 23 points per game. The Vikings, which reached the GMCT Championship a year ago, moved up into the top spot in the GMC Hoops Top Ten after Sayreville’s opening night loss at North Brunswick.

Early on it looked like the Vikings were going to notch another win as they jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but Piscataway asserted itself in the middle two periods by outscoring South Brunswick in the second and third quarters by a combined margin of 38-24 for a 41-32 lead entering the fourth. Despite being outscored in the final period, P-Way had enough to get its much needed upset by the final score of 58-50.

D’Ondre Dent led the way for Piscataway in the victory with a team high 19 points on five field goals, two threes, and three more from the foul line. Mattias Arrindell and Jordan Davidson each chipped in with 9 points. Piscataway had eight different players score in the contest. Mike Ugarte led South Brunswick in defeat with 20 points while Greg Lee added 9 points and Kunal Thakral chipped in with 8.

South Brunswick had seven different players score in the contest. The Vikings also had a 15-9 advantage in points scored from beyond the arc, but Piscataway had a 36-22 edge in points scored from inside the arc, and a 13-12 edge in points scored from the foul line. Each team was able to outscore the other in two of the four periods played.

With the victory, Piscataway improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in GMC Red play. Meanwhile, South Brunswick dropped to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the division. Both teams return to action on Thursday with the Chiefs traveling to Monroe for a game at 7:00 PM while South Brunswick travels to East Brunswick to renew their rivalry in a game at 7:00 PM as well.
