Big First Quarter Lifts Red Raiders Past Guvs

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–Gearing up for the 2017 Central Jersey Group 1 State Tournament, the South Amboy Governors took on Keyport of the Shore Conference in a non-conference game.

Buoyed by a 22-6 first quarter showing, Keyport went on to defeat South Amboy by a score of 59-47. The Red Raiders outscored the Guvs in two of the four quarters played including a 17-13 in the third quarter for the win. The fourth period ended in a 14-14 tie.

Brenden O’Brien led Keyport with 18 points while Cody Young added 16 points, and Chris Hogrefe chipped in with 14. South Amboy was led by sophomore guard, Kyle Gasiewski with a game high 22 points while Isaiah Munoz chipped in with 15 points. Keyport outscored South Amboy by a margin of 21-9 from beyond the arc.

The Red Raiders also enjoyed a 34-30 advantage in points scored from inside the arc. South Amboy had an 8-4 edge in points scored from the charity stripe. Both teams had six different players scored in the game. Bobby Nebus led the Governors with 5 blocked shots.

With the victory, Keyport improved to 7-13 on the season while South Amboy dropped to 6-16 overall. Both teams will be playing in the state playoffs starting on Tuesday, February 28th. Keyport, the 15th seed, will take on 2nd seeded Bound Brook while South Amboy, the 16th seed, will face top seeded and defending champion, Florence.
