Tenth Ranked Blue Jays Start Season Right With Win Over Rams, 62-46
SOUTH RIVER, NJ–After impressing GMC Hoops enough earlier in the week to earn the final slot in the 2007-08 Pre-Season Top Ten, Middlesex High School broke away from a 14-10 first quarter lead with a 19-10 showing in the second for a 33-20 halftime lead, and were never threatened after that in a 62-46 opening night victory in South River. The Blue Jays had a balanced attack with five different players scoring in double figures. Junior guard, Mike Perone led the way for the visitors with a game high 13 points on two field goals, and three trifectas while Nick Fariella added 12 points on six field goals. John Stockton chipped in with the same amount, but on four field goals, a three pointer, and a foul shot. Brother Mark “Sparky” Stockton added 10 points of his own on five field goals while fellow junior, Ryan Farley scored 10 as well on four field goals and two foul shots. Billy Lester connected on two field goals, and a foul shot to round out the Middlesex scoring with 5 points. Kyle Paul Adams, Mike Colacci, Mike Fincher, and Rob Menditto also played, but didn’t score.
For South River, Eddie Dumas led the Rams with a game high 14 points on four field goals and two threes. Eric Seawright equaled Perone’s tally with 13 points on six field goals and a foul shot while Steve Moore chipped in with 11 on four field goals and a three pointer. Senior guard, Jim Witkowski (a field goal and two foul shots) and Brandon Walsh (two field goals) rounded out the Rams scoring with four points each. Â With the victory, the Blue Jays raised their record to 1-0 overall, and in GMC Blue play on the season while South River dropped to 0-1 overall, and in divisional play. Middlesex hosts a Spotswood team that lost to Metuchen at home in its opener, 67-50, on Monday in the Jays home opener. Meanwhile, South River will try to get its first win of the season when it travels to Timothy Christian in Piscataway on Saturday afternoon.
