Raritan Bay Summer League–June 30, 2008

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–It had been nearly two weeks since GMC Hoops had been out to the Raritan Bay Summer League to catch some of the action there. So, the web site stopped by for the nightcap game on Monday night to round out the month of June, and the second full month of off-season hoops coverage around Middlesex County. Luck would have it that GMC Hoops would take in a game from the High School Division in this nightcap as East Brunswick was taking on G-Force. By the time the site arrived at the gym, Gary Lange was out of his world famous Lange Dogs, but there was still plenty of chips and other goodies to partake, which helped immensely after a rough day at work.

Stepping into the gym, GMC Hoops arrived with G-Force leading 13-2 with about 4:10 left in the first half. However, East Brunswick began to put together a rally with a three pointer from the left corner that made it 13-5 at the four minute mark. The trifecta kicked off a 14-4 rally that saw an EB player connect for four threes, and trim the G-Force lead down to just one at the intermission, 17-16. The run was highlighted by a jumper from the foul line after dribbling in a step or two at the 3:21 mark, a three pointer from the right wing that made it 15-10 at the two minute mark, a trey from the top of the key for a 17-13 G-Force lead at the 50 second mark, and capped by another trifecta from the right wing with 30 seconds to go in the period for the 17-16 score at the half.

The only baskets that G-Force had during the run was a bucket while being fouled at the 2:53 mark, but the bonus foul shot was missed, and a score at the one minute mark that made it 17-10. In the opening half, G-Force connected on 7 field goals, but only managed to click on 3 of 10 from the foul line. Meanwhile, East Brunswick got all of its points from the field including four threes and a field goal. In the second half though, G-Force put together a decisive 16-0 tear over a span of 5:10 to break away from a 22-22 tie at the 14:03 mark, and take a 38-22 lead with 8:53 to play as the Stallions went on to win easily, 50-32. Things didn’t start out that easy for G-Force though as East Brunswick managed to tie things up with a 6-5 showing over the first 5:57 to tie things up at 22-22 with a bit more than fourteen minutes to go in the contest.

The Bears started things off with a player getting fouled on a three point attempt from the right wing that resulted in one of three from the foul line for a 17-17 tie at the 19:28 mark. Mark Radil then got G-Force going with an assist on a three pointer from the right corner by Green for a 20-17 Stallion lead with 17:07 left. EB had a chance to get closer almost a minute later, but ended up going 0 of 2 from the foul line, and despite getting the offensive rebound, couldn’t score. G-Force then added another score for a five point, 22-17 lead with exactly 15 minutes remaining in regulation. East Brunswick then rallied with five straight points including a three pointer from the right wing at the 14:21 mark, and a steal for a layup moments later to knot the score at 22-22 with 14:03 left. On the very next possession though, G-Force began its decisive spurt with a three pointer at the 13:50 mark for a 25-22 lead. The run continued as East Brunswick was unable to score on a subsequent possession despite four offensive rebounds, and the Stallions picked up another field goal at the 12:32 mark for a 27-22 lead.

Over the next 2:15, G-Force added another seven points including one more three pointer from the left corner by Green for a 34-22 advantage at the 10:17 mark. Rob Gomulka, who plays for St. Joseph’s, added a drive for a layup at the 9:14 mark, and then another layup off a steal to cap the 16-0 run for a 38-22 lead with 8:53 to play. From there, the Stallions built up a lead as big as 47-26 on a 9-4 spurt over about a 4:30 span, and then coasted to the 50-32 victory. GMC Hoops will be back out at Raritan Bay in the near future, but on Tuesday night, the web site plans to be down at Bound Brook for the nightcap game in that summer league between Piscataway and Montgomery.
