Former GMC Coaches Now In Watchung Conference

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–With the hiring of former South Plainfield head coach Jeff Lubreski at Plainfield, there are now three former GMC coaches now residing in the Watchung Conference. All three coaches had some success at their former GMC addresses. Take a look below:

Former GMC Coaches In The Mighty Watchung Conference

  • Jeff Lubreski–Previously coached at South Plainfield. Career record of 247-202 with four GMC White crowns, four GMCT Final Fours, two GMCT Titles, five Sectional Final Fours, and two Sectional Championships. Now coaching at Plainfield High School.

  • Chris Balent–Previously coached at South Brunswick. Was there for two seasons. During those two years, South Brunswick went 49-9 including a 25-3 mark in the GMC Red. Reached at least the GMCT Elite Eight in each of those two years including a Final Four berth in the 2007 GMCT. Won the 2007 Central Jersey Group IV Championship, and lost to Linden in the 2007 Group IV State Final. Now coaching at Elizabeth High School.

  • Tony DiGiovanni–Previously coached at both Piscataway and New Brunswick High School. At Piscataway, DiGiovanni guided the Chiefs to a Championship in the Vaughn Stapleton Holiday Tournament, which had become a rarity for the Chiefs, and a berth in the 2004 GMCT Elite Eight, where it gave seemingly invincible South Plainfield a run for its money before losing in overtime 59-56 in one of the greatest games covered by GMC Hoops. He then repeated the same feat the following year at New Brunswick, but also had the Zebras finally knock off South Plainfield in the 2005 North Jersey Section 2 Group III Quarterfinals, and lose the Newark Shabazz in the semis. DiGiovanni ended up going 45-30 during his three years in the GMC. Now coaching at his alma mater, Union Township.
