Evaluating 2008-09 GMC State Tournament Performance

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–Despite the fact that the GMC only had 15 teams in the overall state tournament field, the conference still enjoyed a great deal of success with three sectional final berths, eight Final Four appearances, and 11 section Elite Eight berths. Here is the breakdown by brackets:

North Jersey Section 2 Group IV

  • Piscataway lost to Plainfield in the Championship Game (70-52)
  • Colonia lost to Piscataway in the Quarterfinals (62-57)

Central Jersey Group IV

  • Monroe lost to Freehold Township in the Semifinals (81-73)
  • Sayreville lost to West Windsor-Plainsboro South in the Semifinals (49-48 OT)
  • East Brunswick lost to Sayreville in the Quarterfinals (59-57)

Central Jersey Group II

  • Middlesex lost to Manasquan in the Championship (59-36)
  • Spotswood lost to Middlesex in the Semifinals (54-48)

Central Jersey Group I

  • Perth Amboy Tech lost to Asbury Park in the Semifinals (109-50)
  • East Brunswick Tech lost to Perth Amboy Tech in the Quarterfinals (54-53)

Non-Public A South

  • St. Joseph’s lost to CBA in the Semifinals (58-48)

Non-Public B South

  • Cardinal McCarrick lost to Trenton Catholic Academy in the Championship (70-51)

No GMC team won a sectional title for the first time since 2006. Against non-conference opponents in the states, the GMC went a combined 10-9 versus non-conference opponents.
