MCC Summer League–June 30, 2009–South River Rolls Past Sayreville…Again

For The Second Time This Summer, Rams Handle Sayreville’s JV, 51-31

EDISON, NJ–In a rematch of an opening day summer league game, South River again easily handled Sayreville coming out on top with a 51-31 win at the Middlesex County College Summer League this past Tuesday night.

The Bombers were never in the game from the outset. The Rams jumped out to an early 12-0 lead and never looked back. Sayreville again featured a very young team comprised mostly of players from their JV squad and were ill-prepared to face South River – even with the Rams showcasing a lot of their younger, up and coming freshman players. At least for this game the Bombers brought more than five players, which only added to their troubles when they faced South River the first go-round.

The Rams were without the services of Shawn Fenton (away attending football camp) and Stevie Moore (evidently still bothered by a thumb and/or wrist injury) but this didn’t affect the game’s outcome. Coach Rodney Harris substituted freely letting his younger players get major playing time. Again, as in previous summaries I have to apologize for not being familiar with some of the newer South River players and I can’t report much in the way of individual scoring stats. However, soon to be senior Brandon Walsh did score eight points, while a host of Rams added contributions from the floor.

The only problem that I saw in this game was that South River seemed to play down to the competition. I mean in no way to take anything away from Sayreville, but they fielded basically a JV and freshman team while the Rams played most of the guys who will be starting varsity come this December. This game should have been a runaway for South River, but they let the Bombers stay in the game as they nearly matched the Rams point for point in the second half.

South River improves to 4-1 and faces Roselle Park on Thursday July 2nd, while Sayreville drops to 0-4.
