GMC Gridiron–Coaching Change At South Brunswick

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ–On Thursday morning, GMC Hoops learned in an article from the Star-Ledger that South Brunswick High School will have its third coach in three years when the 2010 season convenes next fall. Tarig Holman, who replaced Rick Mantz this season, will not be rehired.

Holman only served one season, and posted a mark of 3-7 including victories over Manalapan (20-7), Woodbridge (14-7 in OT), and Rancocas Valley (7-6). In his last game, the Vikings lost 6-2 to neighborhood rival North Brunswick on Thanksgiving. After having the best season in school history last year with a 9-2 overall record, a share of the GMC Red Division title with Sayreville and Piscataway, and reaching the semifinals of the Central Jersey Group IV State Tournament before losing to defending champion, Brick Memorial, South Brunswick finished last in the GMC Red this year with a 1-4 record.

SBHS, which began the season as a Top 10 team in the GMC Gridiron Poll, lost six of its last seven games in 2009 after starting the season at 2-1. Since the inception of the Greater Middlesex Conference in 1986, South Brunswick has compiled an overall record of 86-141-2 including six winning seasons. Over the past six seasons, the Vikings have had only two winning seasons (2005) and (2008) in addition to a .500 season (2007) while compiling a record of 30-31 overall and a 22-19 mark in the Red Division. The school has had three different coaches during that span.
