Several Interesting Matchups In GMC On Monday Night

EDISON, NJ–There are eight games on the schedule around the Greater Middlesex Conference this Monday.  Only one is out of conference as Middlesex takes on Pingry.  Piscataway has a bye from Red Division play and McCarrick and Monroe are off from White Division play while there are seven matchups in divisional play.

Three games stand out.  The first is between Old Bridge and St. Joseph’s.  The Falcons are playing their first game in New Jersey after being out in Atlanta, Georgia at the St. Pius X Holiday Tournament, where they placed fourth out of eight teams.

St. Joe’s enters the contest at 3-2 while Old Bridge, which won two of three at the Randolph Roundball Festival in Morris County over the holidays, comes in with a mark of 4-1 overall.  The Knights are off to their best start in quite some time.

I don’t recall the last time, Old Bridge began the season 4-1.  OBHS had some good teams in 2002 and 2003 with the latter making it to the Central Jersey Group IV Championship before losing to Trenton.

The other two key matchups involve teams from the White Division as Colonia travels to New Brunswick while Sayreville heads over to Carteret.   The Patriots are in the unusual position of starting the season at 0-4 after a pre-season ranking of fifth in the GMC Hoops Top Ten.  However, the Pats have taken on the likes of Monroe, St. Anthony’s, Ridge, and Rutgers Prep, and lost three of those games by a combined total of 12 points.

Meanwhile, the Zebras are coming off an upset win at second ranked Monroe on Saturday.  New Brunswick, led by junior forward, Jaquan Cook, come into the contest at 2-4, and has lost to the likes North Brunswick by a point, and East Brunswick by six.  Sayreville has also played well in defeat losing to Carteret in overtime by four, and then to Hillsborough by three in the Championship Game of the Hillsborough Holiday Tournament.

The Bombers visit Carteret with a 3-2 record overall.  On the other hand, the Ramblers are 2-2 on the season with losses to North Brunswick on opening night, and North Hunterdon in the opening round of the Gene Haley Memorial Tournament.  However, Carteret also defeated third ranked Cardinal McCarrick on December 21st.
