New Egypt vs. William Allen (PA)

The Warriors of New Egypt, which had lost handily to Ewing earlier in the day (41-19), finished at .500 in the shootout overall by defeating William Allen of Pennsylvania on Sunday night. This was a back and forth game throughout with five lead changes over the final ten minutes of the half, and no lead bigger than five points in the second half. Mark Pryzbylkowski provided the spark for NEHS with three pointers at the 6:59 mark, 3:53 mark, two minute mark, and at the buzzer to help the Warriors overcome a 20-14 lead, and take a 24-22 edge at the intermission.

The Warriors expanded that lead to 49-44 with 2:37 remaining thanks to a 21-18 run. William Allen, which came into this game undefeated at the Summer Prime Time Shootout, got two free throws to pull within three again, and had a chance to get closer, but New Egypt drew a charge, and Allen was called for a technical foul that led to two free throws with 1:09 remaining for a 51-46 lead. William Allen then scored four of the next five points including a layup with 13.1 seconds left for a 52-50 New Egypt lead, but Desmond Hubert made both free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining for the 54-50 win. Coatesville went 1-3 over the three days while Robbinsville ended up 0-4.

St. Joseph’s vs. Cherry Hill West

While Piscataway and Shabazz were duking it out in the finale from the East Gym, St. Joe’s was rolling past Cherry Hill West in the West Gym. The Falcons, which had a 15-10 lead with 12:30 to go in the first half, embarked on a 22-2 run despite the fact that Slay Sudah was in crutches on the sideline, and Quenton DeCosey didn’t score much in the time the site was watching this contest. However, Nick Straughn and James Ziemba made contributions as they combined for scored 10 of the 22 points during the run while Straughn had an assist on another score as St. Joe’s took a 40-18 halftime lead, and never looked back. Karim Awad also chipped in for the Green Birds, which finished the four day event with a 74-40 victory to go 2-2. Cherry Hill West, which also lost to Piscataway to go 0-2 on Sunday, finished up at 1-3.

Piscataway vs. Shabazz

This was the best game of the four games seen by GMC Hoops. Piscataway finished unbeaten while Shabazz went winless over the four days after a fine tug of war between two of the basketball giants in Jersey was decided by late free throws. Anthony Greene made two from the foul line with 20.1 seconds remaining, and a last second shot attempt by the Bulldogs was off the mark as P-Way edged Shabazz by a 38-37 margin. The Chiefs, which defeated Cherry Hill West earlier in the evening, trailed 8-4 with 14:26 to go in the first half, but closed out the period with a 20-14 run for a 24-22 lead at the intermission. Donovan Kirkland scored six of his points during the run while Vik Singh, Greg Davis, and Temi Adebayo also made contributions.

In the second half though, Shabazz fought back by scoring seven of the first ten points of the period to take a 29-27 lead with 11:16 to play. The Bulldogs went up by three on a two handed jam off a nice look down low at the 9:50 mark before Davis netted two free throws at the 9:45 mark, Kirkland made a steal that led to a David White layup at the 8:23 mark, and Anthony Greene sank a pull-up jumper from the right side at the 6:59 mark for a 34-31 lead. However, Greene missed two layin attempts, and Shabazz retook the lead at 35-34 with four straight points including a layup with 2:21 left. The Bulldogs then went up by three with 1:05 remaining on a drive from the right side for a scoop shot layup. P-Way wouldn’t be denied though as Tajae Sharpe scored on an offensive rebound and follow of White miss with 50.3 seconds left, and Greene made the game winning free throws with 20 seconds to go. P-Way ended the event going 4-0 while Shabazz went 0-4.

GMC Hoops would like to again thank Jeff Hewitson, Frank Giancarlis, the staff at Allentown High School, and the folks at the Summer Prime Time Shootout for their assistance and hospitality over the three days of this event.
