Former Metuchen Standout Carberry Making Strides At Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY–Not often does a freshman come along and make a significant contribution to his team. There are obvious exceptions that we see every season at the Division I level. Carmelo Anthony, who now plays for the Denver Nuggets, made such an impact at Syracuse as he led the Orange to the national championship in 2003. John Wall of the Washington Wizards had a similar influence on Kentucky last season. Most times though, especially at the Division II and Division III levels, these newcomers are brought along more slowly.

Not the case for Metuchen’s Evan Carberry. The former Bulldog is making strides in his freshman year at Vassar. In the first five games of the 2010-11 season, Carberry has already started three games, and averaged 25 minutes per game. The former Bulldog standout, has made 11 of 30 shots from the floor for nearly 37 percent including 4 of 9 from beyond the arc. The four year varsity player at MHS is currently averaging 5.6 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game along with 1.4 assists per game for the Brewers.

So far this season though, Vassar has struggled with a 1-4 record against non-conference competition. In the season opener against Endicott, Carberry had a team high 9 rebounds in a 70-66 loss. Then, against Bard College, he had 6 points and 6 rebounds in Vassar’s only win of the season to date (62-48). Most recently, Carberry went 4 of 8 from the floor including a three pointer for 9 points along with 4 rebounds in a 59-45 loss at Marywood College.

Vassar is a Division III school that competes in the Liberty League against such opponents as Hobart, Rensselaer, and Rochester. Last season, the Brewers went 2-23 overall including an 0-14 mark in conference play. In 2008-09, Vassar College was 10-15 including a 5-9 mark in conference.
