Sayreville Not Giving Up On This Season

Bombers Have Fought Back With Four Wins In Last Five Games After Digging Deep Hole

SAYREVILLE, NJ–Break up the Sayreville Bombers! After losing 13 of its first 14 games, Sayreville has won four of its last five, and is trying to salvage a season that seemed lost. Over the past eight days, the Bombers have defeated Highland Park (73-59), Woodbridge (53-50), Edison (63-60), and J.P. Stevens (56-48). The only loss by Sayreville during this stretch was a 60-58 decision at home to New Brunswick on Tuesday, February 1st.

Before the recent resurgent play, Sayreville’s lone win was a 58-53 decision at home over Dunellen on January 8th. In the victory over J.P. Stevens on Saturday, senior forward, Mike Phair led the way with 16 points, but the clutch shooting of Cody Van Note helped the Bombers get the win. Van Note, who has 23 trifectas since coming up to the varsity five games ago, scored 14, and had four treys including one with two minutes to go that gave the Bombers a five point lead.

In the last three games, sophomore, Joe Saitta has figured prominently as he has averaged just over 18 points per game. Saitta picked up a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds in the upset win over Woodbridge, and then after scoring 23 in a loss to New Brunswick, he came up with 18 points and six boards in the three point victory over Edison. The Bombers are 2-1 this season against teams from Edison Township after defeating EHS and Stevens this past week.

Sayreville has been also getting contributions from freshman guard, Corey Taite and junior Chris Piniero, which were bright spots in a tough loss at home to Cardinal McCarrick back on January 13th. Taite showed a heart that was much, much bigger than his small 5’1″, 120 lb frame. It has been a tough year for first year head coach, John Wojcik, who replaced Shawn Currie after the Bombers reached the GMCT Final Four for the first time since winning it all in 2000. However, the recent play of Saitta along with newcomer Van Note as well as the contributions from Taite and Piniero give Wojcik hope for the future.
