State Tourney Cutoff Should Be Extended Further

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–Last week, the NJSIAA decided to extend the cutoff from this past Saturday to Monday. However, with all the games that have been snowed out due to the miserable winter we’ve had all across Jersey, the one day extension is a drop in the bucket.

Now, there are teams such as Perth Amboy (played 21 games), Piscataway (19 games), St. Joseph’s (18 games), East Brunswick (18 games), Colonia (18 games), Cardinal McCarrick (18 games), North Brunswick (17 games), and New Brunswick (17 games) that have already played a fair amount of games, and wouldn’t be affected by the timing of the cutoff. However, there are schools such as J.F. Kennedy (13 games), Middlesex (14 games), Metuchen (14 games), Bishop Ahr (15 games), and Carteret (15 games) that could use some more time.

Now while those aforementioned teams from the GMC Blue are all in good shape to qualify for the various state tournaments, there are teams such as Sayreville, South Plainfield, and Spotswood that could benefit from a little more extra time. The Bombers have started to play well as of late. After starting the season with 13 losses in its first 14 games including seven straight out of the chute, Sayreville has won four of its last five. Extending the state tournament for another couple days until mid-week would be beneficial to some teams looking to benefit from recent momentum, and qualify.
