GMC Hoops Play-By-Play–J.F. Kennedy vs. Bishop Ahr–GMCT Quarterfinals–February 20, 2011

EDISON, NJ–Due to some problems with my broadband wireless device, I wasn’t able to post regular updates on Facebook. Instead, I typed up some notes from the contest between J.F. Kennedy and Bishop Ahr. These notes are from the second period on. You’ll notice that I went with more of a play-by-play format in the fourth quarter.

Second Quarter

Following the Kennedy timeout, the Trojans got on the board again as Kenny Virden got a steal at mid court, and went the distance for a layup, and a 20-14 lead.  Both teams exchanged baskets before Steve Alvarez connected on a three pointer that made the score 22-19 with about a minute to go in the first half.  BGA got a score down low by Virden with 32.7 seconds left in the half, but Toczynski made a nice entry pass to Pichalski on the left side of the paint for a layup with a few seconds left in the second that made the score 24-21 at the half.

Third Quarter

4:12–JFK calls a 30 second timeout after a three pointer by Alvarez from the left wing to pull within four at 35-31.  Bishop Ahr had opened the second half with a three pointer by Blakely from the left wing at the 7:31 mark for a 27-21 lead.  After both teams exchanged scores including a Shabas Clarke layup for Kennedy, Virden scored another layup off a steal at the 6:30 mark for a 31-23 lead.

The Mustangs got a traditional three point by Robinson at the 6:15 mark to narrow the gap to five at 31-26, and then got five of the next nine points including the Alvarez three, and another layup by Clarke.  The Trojans then scored six of the next ten points including a layup by Widdoss as he was fouled, and then a follow by Widdoss for a 41-35 lead.  Kennedy tried to rally back with a steal for a layup by Clarke, and then a layup by Pichalski to pull within four at 41-37 and 43-39, but Widdoss was fouled on a three point attempt with no time left on  the clock, and made two of three for a 45-39 lead.

Fourth Quarter

7:11—Widdoss sinks three pointer as he is fouled for BGA to give the Trojans a 48-40 lead.

3:49–Things not looking good right now for Kennedy.  Despite a three pointer by Robinson, and one of two free throws by A.J. Williams, the Mustangs still trail by the score of 52-45.

2:50–We have an Ahr timeout with Robinson at the line, and the Trojans leading 54-47.  Alvarez scored a bucket for Kennedy while Salva got two for the BGA.

1:32–JFK calls full timeout after Pichalski layup narrows deficit to 58-50.

1:25–JFK–Williams steal leads to a basket and a foul by Robinson, but he missed the bonus free throw for a 58-52 Ahr lead.

1:00–BGA–After Robinson missed a circus shot amongst a host of Trojans, Virden scored an easy layin for a 62-52 lead.

42.0–BGA–Roger Kilgore makes both free throws for a 64-52 lead.

33.2–BGA–After a JFK score and a timeout, Roger Kilgore makes another pair of foul shots for a 66-54 lead.

25.7–JFK–Calls timeout…not giving up…just got another three to draw within nine at 66-57.

4.6–BGA–Rashad Kilgore scores on a breakaway layup after Blakely made one of two at the line for a 69-57 victory.  Ahr advances to the semifinals for the first time since winning it all in 1992.
