Raritan Bay Summer League–May 31, 2011

South Amboy League Battling Through Tough First Two Weeks

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–On Tuesday night, GMC Hoops traveled over to South Amboy Middle/High School to see some of the action from the fifth night of the 2011 Raritan Bay Summer League. There were four games on tap, and the site came over after work to catch the final two games.

One of the games involved the Central Jersey Hawks while the other was a girls game. GMC Hoops had a chance to talk at length with the league co-directors, Gary Lange and Tom Reilly about how things have been going in the first two weeks. Simply put, it has been difficult. There have been many cancellations over the first two weeks, which had been a rare occurrence in the eight years the site has covered the league.

Making things tougher has been the fact that the High School Division has had a tough time getting off the ground. The reason behind that is because we are still in the middle of the Spring Sports season, and basketball coaches aren’t allowed to have contact with their teams during this period. Many of the coaches that have teams in the H.S. Division want to coach their teams so games involving teams in that division won’t really get underway for another two weeks.

Despite that, the league has 25 teams in the league after again creating a great deal of interest around the area. According to Lange, there were as many as 50 teams interested in playing in the league. The girls division has been a fine addition with five teams, and has been featured in at least one game every night so far this season.
