McCarrick’s Burwell Headed To Towson University

Former Highland Park And McCarrick Standout Leaving USF To Play In Colonial Athletic Association

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ–Last Thursday at the East Brunswick Team Camp, GMC Hoops learned from Cardinal McCarrick head coach, Joe Lewis that former Eagles standout, Mike Burwell, is headed to Towson University of the CAA after playing two seasons in the Big East at the University of South Florida.

Burwell, who began his high school career at Highland Park, and led the Owls to their last playoff appearance as a sophomore in the 2005-06 season, played a season of prep school hoops at South Kent Prep in Connecticut before heading south to join the Bulls. As a freshman, Burwell played in 19 of 33 games for the Bulls, and averaged 4.8 minutes, 1.2 points, and 0.7 rebounds per game. This past year, Burwell played in 31 contests including five starts, and averaged 8.1 minutes per game, 1.7 points per game, and 0.8 rebounds per game.

Two seasons ago, the Bulls finished the year at 20-13 including a 9-9 mark in the Big East.. South Florida won a preliminary round matchup in the Big East Tournament over DePaul before losing to Georgetown. This past season, the Bulls registered a huge upset over Villanova in the conference tourney after going 10-23 during the regular season including a 3-15 mark in Big East play. Meanwhile, back in the CAA, the Towson Tigers were 4-26 overall including an 0-18 mark in conference play.
