Sayreville’s Corey Taite–A Little Young Man With A Big Heart

Diminutive Point Guard For The Bombers Shouldn’t Be Underestimated

SAYREVILLE, NJ–Over the past couple of seasons, I have gone to see Sayreville a few times at the Bomb Shelter, and one thing that I am always reminded of is the saying that it is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

Sayreville’s sophomore guard, Corey Taite is a classic example of that. There have been times where I have seen players on the floor or people in the stands snicker and giggle when he comes out to play. However, not too long afterwards, they are all surprised when he puts on a move like he did toward the end of the game against Woodbridge on Thursday night. You can see it toward the end of the highlight video I posted from the contest.

After the Barrons Duquan Bailey made two free throws with 27 seconds left for a 61-55 lead, Taite took the ensuing inbounds, dribbled the ball to midcourt, went behind the back to burn a Woodbridge defender, got into the forecourt on the left side, did a crossover dribble to his right, used a screen from Trey Johnson, and splashed a three pointer from the right wing over the outstretched arm of another Woodbridge defender with 18 seconds to go to close the gap to 61-58.

Listed as only 5’4″ and 125 pounds, Taite ended up with a team high 18 points including four threes, which all came in the fourth quarter. Three of those treys came in the final 42 seconds to turn a 57-49 deficit into a three point Woodbridge lead. He made similar plays in a loss at home to Cardinal McCarrick last season, where he scored all 10 of his points in the final 2:18 of the first half.

The kid plays with a big heart. More heart than some kids that have much more size, talent, and athletic ability. I would have him on my team any day.
