GMC Gridiron–Game Notes–Sayreville @ Old Bridge–Opening Night–September 7, 2012

OLD BRIDGE, NJ–On opening night of the 2012 Greater Middlesex Conference football season, GMC Gridiron traveled out to Lombardi Field in Old Bridge to take in the neighborhood rivalry clash between the Knights of OBHS and Sayreville. After a scorless tie in the first period, Sayreville picked off a pass just over a minute into the second, and moments later, scored a touchdown. Then, toward the end of the half, the Bombers got another rushing touchdown to take a 14-0 halftime lead, and never looked back in a 35-0 shutout. Below are some notes from the game.

First Quarter

Very good crowd on both sides of the field…long line for tickets…period ended in a scoreless tie.


Second Quarter

10:59–SAY–After Old Bridge drives to midfield–Bombers (#15) intercepts a pass by OB’s Vin Gargano.

10:49–SAY–Deon Miller rumbles left for about 40 yards and a touchdown–Cureton extra point is good for a 7-0 lead.

24.9–SAY–Goes on about a 75 to 80 yard drive capped by an 18 yard touchdown run by Miller for a 14-0 lead.

2.9–SAY–After OB’s Gargano scrambled for about 25 to 30 yards to get OB within scoring distance….a pass to the end zone by Gargano is intercepted by the Bombers (#23–Hartfield). Sayreville then runs out the clock for a 14-0 lead at the half.


Third Quarter

7:32–SAY–takes the opening kickoff, and after almost fumbling it away, the Bombers go on a 77 yard drive capped by a 12 yard run by Zeke Perkinson for a 21-0 lead.

1:47–SAY–takes over after stopping Old Bridge’s best drive since the end of the first quarter, and then drive down the field for another touchdown on a 5 yard run by Miles Hartfield. Cureton adds extra point for a 28-0 lead.

1:38–OB–Aaron Ford takes the kickoff, and then fumbles it. Sayreville recovers deep in Knights territory.


Fourth Quarter

11:00–SAY–Scores on a touchdown run from inside the 10 yard line by Aaron Davis for a 35-0 lead.

1:45–OB—reserves put together their a good drive for their closest approach to the Sayreville end zone in the game at the 18 yard line on a run by LaVecchia (#9), but can’t score as SAY gets a fumble recovery from Davis.
