GMC Gridiron–Opening Weekend–Quick Picks–Friday Night

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–Opening week of the 2013 Greater Middlesex Conference football season is now upon us with 8 games on Thursday that were postponed due to the severe weather across New Jersey. So, now, we have five games on Friday night, five games on Saturday afternoon and evening, and another two on Sunday afternoon. GMC Gridiron is just posting the picks for the three original games scheduled on Friday night. For the other games that were postponed on Thursday, please check out those picks here.

  • Colonia at J.F. Kennedy–The Patriots and Mustangs are long time crosstown rivals that will be renewing theiir rivalry under the lights at Kennedy Friday night. Colonia lost a lot to graduation, and now has a new coach in Tom Roarty, who also helps out with boys basketball at Bishop Ahr.  Roarty replaces long time head coach, Ben LaSala, who is now the athletic director at Colonia. The Pats still have some good players back in Sam Pero and Chris Carrothers while JFK features Anthony Roberts with a solid offensive line returning.Prediction:  Colonia wins, 20-19.
  • Woodbridge at Perth Amboy–The Barrons also lost a lot from last year with the graduation of Duquan Bailey and Mika Graham among others, but still has a good group coming back while Perth Amboy is rebuilding. The Barrons should win easily here.  Prediction:    Woodbridge wins, 28-6.
  • Point Pleasant Beach at Cardinal McCarrick–The Garnet Gulls lost some key players from last year’s squad, but so did McCarrick from a team that only won one game last year. The Eagles also only have 21 on their roster this year, and will need Arnold Arnaldy to be healthy and produce at QB. The Eagles are at home, but Point Beach will be too much.  Prediction:  Point Pleasant Beach wins, 24-6.

GMC Gridiron plans to be at two games today. First, the site will travel over to Matawan to see Bishop Ahr take on the Huskies from Monmouth County. Then, we’ll travel over to Kennedy to see the Mustangs take on Colonia.
